Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is an area in physiotherapy that targets dysfunction and pain in the pelvic floor muscles and the surrounding area. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is practiced by physiotherapists that have undergone additional education and training in order to specialize in pelvic floor conditions & assessment. Treatments themselves may consist of a combination of education, manual techniques, and specialized exercises to help you reach your goals!

A common misconception is that every pelvic floor condition is treated with Kegels. While Kegels can be helpful for some conditions, it can also make other conditions worse. A pelvic floor physiotherapist will complete a full proper assessment to determine the best treatment plan for you. Another misconception is that urinary incontinence, especially following pregnancy, is not treatable and the individual will have to manage living with their symptoms long term. In fact, individuals experiencing urinary incontinence can benefit significantly from pelvic floor physiotherapy to reach their goals.

Symptoms & conditions commonly treated by pelvic floor physiotherapists:

  • Pelvic floor pain
  • Pelvic muscle weakness
  • Pelvic muscle tightness
